Fact is stranger than fiction; this saying often comes to mind when I read about the future of medicine. Things that seem inconceivable today will take healthcare to dizzying new heights thanks to the exponential growth in information technology. One of the great secular growth themes of the future will be medicines info-tech transformation. A good diversified way to play this trend is through the iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology Index (Ticker IBB). As always be careful on where you buy any asset; take into consideration the duration of the trade and the current market conditions.

Currently the market is very jittery due to the debt ceiling negotiations so if Washington fails to act we may see a pullback that gives you a better opportunity to buy. Personally I use GTC limit orders to buy (GTC = Good Til Canceled), this way you can do your analysis, pick your spot, and wait for the inevitable market volatility to come along to pick up your merchandise at cheap prices. Another good strategy is to put these orders in increments. For example; say I want to buy 1000 shares of the IBB for a long term time horizon. I would put a GTC orders for 250@100.00; 250@95.00; 250@92.50; and 250@90.00. Because I have done my analysis and I want to own the IBB around 90.00 but I don’t know if it will trade down that low so this way you can pay up for some and not miss the boat while retaining buying discipline.
